Home security is something that everyone knows is important. Usually, people will go above and beyond on expenditure to protect their homes and everything inside of it. However, a lot of people don’t know that there are actually a lot of things you can do FOR FREE that will help make a secure home. Here’s a list of our top 5 FREE ways to help make a secure home in Thomastown.
1. Lock your locks!
This might seem pretty self-explanatory, but so often people forget to check their windows and doors, particularly before they leave the house or go to bed. This makes a great entry and exit point for burglars. So make sure to always double check your locks on windows and doors before heading out or heading to bed to keep unwanted visitors out.
2. Don’t leave the spare key hanging around
Leaving a spare key under the doormat, in a pot plant, or somewhere in the garden is so common, that it’s often where thieves will check first, to gain easy entry. Just don’t leave a key lying around, because even though you think you’re being sneaky, chances are, they’ll figure it out. The best option to keep your home secure is either to leave the spare key with a trusted friend or neighbour or in a key safe.
3. Close your Curtains
There are a couple of reasons to keep your curtains closed. The first is that if your curtain is open, normally thieves are able to tell if you’re at home or not i.e. if this is an opportunity for them to break in. Secondly, if a thief can see valuable items inside your house, that is going to provide them an incentive to break in. Whereas, if you keep your curtains closed, that temptation is somewhat removed, making your home more secure.
4. Don’t help them out!
Try not to leave garden tools or other items lying around outside your house that may potentially be used to break in. There are quite often reports of thieves who have been able to break in using garden tools or something else they found in that person’s yard. Keep your tools locked away and out of sight so you’re not helping thieves enter or damage your home.
5. Keep the Outdoor Lights on
Keeping any outdoor lights on deters thieves from trying to break in. Whenever you drive past a school or set of buildings during the night, we have all seen they keep their lights on to spot any potential thieves from a distance. It is best to use normal lights as opposed to motion sensor lights, as people can find ways around them, making them less secure. It is best to light a larger area, so as to you’re your home as secure as possible.
